Great art on display -- yet again -- in Melrose
Yo! Archer, Bronson, Williston! Why is it that every time I start covering a local exhibition outside of Gainesville, I end up in the same place; Melrose? Come on guys, I know you got artists, time to pony up a show or two. I need a new direction to steer my bike.
I will grant that with two fine galleries Melrose has an edge on most small towns, and both of them have new exhibits. Bellamy Road has opened a show titled Disobedient Women that focuses on the works of Linda Pollini, Theresa Hodges and Hannah Price. There are 45 pieces that cover a wide range, from Hodges pastel self-portrait to Pollini's FTAA Miami large-scale oil. This last was one of my favorite pieces; there is nothing subtle about the message. Pollini captures a group of Miami's finest in full riot gear, masks and all. The fact that the police have to go to this level for a trade meeting is disturbing. One glance and I immediately found myself looking for Darth Vader.
Hannah Price rounds out the trio. When I saw the advance photos for her work, I yawned into my monitor. Live the work is a very different creature. Price's mixed media comes in a variety of flavors. Some are sculptures, some part diorama, and others are classic blends. There are tons of details to take in, and her wonderfully twisted sense of humor is front and center. The Homewreckers Club window box, complete with rolling pin and miniature frying pan, had me laughing out loud. I also appreciated the flavors that permeate her work: Mexican folk art, graphic novel pen and ink, and circus colors. This is Bellamy Road's last show for the season and will hang until May 27.
